Kentucky Derby Betting – Bet on The LongShots – Horse – EzineMark

I am glad on how Kentucky Derby 2012 is turning into. There’s no clear favorite for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, which means you can expect big payouts no matter which horse wins the race – Saturday’s race could pay astronomical prices. And for that being said, I think it’s time for people to look into longshots for their Kentucky Derby Betting.

Sometimes the best racehorse to bet against at a racetrack is the favorite. That may sound strange since we know that favorites win about a third of the time, but if you want to make money at Kentucky Derby betting then you can’t be betting favorites every race, you need to pick some longshots. Remember last year? Only a few at Churchill Downs, or anywhere though that Animal Kingdom will win. Animal Kingdom was unproven, untested and a long-shot in every sense of the word, but sometimes it’s the unknowns that surprise. Will that be the case on this year’s Kentucky Deby too?

If you feel it will be, then let me help you with your longshots bet. Here are three live, longshots for the 138th Run for the Roses:

Alpha (+1500): Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, this one was banged at the start of his last race but still rebounded to finish second to Gemologist in the Wood Memorial. Alpha has solid bloodlines, he’s out of Bernardini, and has three wins and two seconds in six lifetime starts. His best Beyer speed figure is 98, which is actually pretty strong for this field. His worst start was an 11th place finish in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, which featured a bunch of Derby entrants. That result will certainly keep Alpha’s odds pretty long. McLaughlin hasn’t picked a jockey yet but Rajiv Maragh worked him Saturday and he was the fastest colt over 5 furlongs on the day.

Take Charge Indy (+1500): The AP Indy colt will be ridden by Calvin Borel. That’s good enough reason for a couple of shekels right there. Add in the fact that he won the Florida Derby at 7-1 beating Union Rags by more than a length and it’s clear this horse has some speed. Borel won the 2009 Derby on Mine That Bird at 50-1. Take Charge Indy’s won’t be that high but with 20 horses in the field he’ll probably try to set the pace.

Daddy Long Legs (+3000): If all the true contenders come out of the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile then Daddy Long Legs certainly fits the bill. Although he was 12th in the race he went off at a respectable 11-1. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, this colt went on to win the Grade II UAE Derby at 1 3/16 miles in Dubai. He’s won three of five races lifetime and his relative obscurity to the American racing fans is sure to keep his odds quite long. The son of Scat Daddy would make quite a story if he won this race. Scat Daddy was injured in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and forced to retire from racing. He’ll try to win this one for dad.

I hope you will consider these three long shots when doing Kentucky Derby betting. Who knows? With a touch of luck, these long shots will be your key to win.l be your key to win.

Handicapping a Wide-Open Kentucky Derby Field – EzineMark

Shackleford – game 2nd place finish in the Florida Derby where he ran on the front and put away the other early speed in To Honor and Serve and Soldat, narrowly missing holding off Dialed In by a head. He won his maiden over the Churchill Downs surface in his maiden last year, so he is proven over the surface. With odds that are likely to be 15-1 or higher, he could be a very inviting value play. Strongly consider.
Stay Thirsty – ran a stinker in the Florida Derby with no excuses after climbing his way up the ladder by winning the Gotham at Aqueduct. His high Beyer Speed figure of 89 is not even close to what it will take to win the Derby. Regal breeding out of Bernardini makes him eligible to run all day long. Still, would have to take a giant step forward off a horrible race. Can’t see it happening.
Derby Kitten – snuck in the race at the last minute due to the defection of Toby’s Corner. Last seen running a close 2nd in the Grade II Lexington at Keeneland. Improving Beyer Speed figures are an encouraging sign. On the not so bright side, his lone dirt start was beyond dismal, and runners coming over from the poly track at Keeneland have made no mark on the Derby since the track switched over from dirt. Likely 50-1 shot and deservedly so.
Soldat – Fountain of Youth winner decided not to show up in the Florida Derby while trying to stalk the early pace, and hated having dirt thrown in his face. His early speed which was earlier thought to be a detriment may however work to his advantage with the defection of several early speed types such as The Factor and J.P.’s Gusto. Has shown that he relishes running in the slop, and with rain forecast for Saturday, he may get a chance to prove it again. Interesting.
Brilliant Speed – last seen in the Blue Grass at Keeneland where he showed a brilliant late turn of foot to capture the race. Yet another with poor dirt form that will make him a likely long-shot. Consider as an underlay in your exotics, and maybe a win bet if his odds soar over 20-1.
Twice the Appeal – tries to take the Mine That Bird route of Sunland Derby to the Run for the Roses. Unlike Mine That Bird, Twice the Appeal won the race over heavily favored Astrology. The dark bay 3 year-old son of Successful Appeal also has one other distinct advantage that Mine That Bird had, jockey Calvin Borel at the reigns, who has won 3 out of the last 4 Derbies. The 89 last race Beyer Speed figure he earned would make him a 50-1 longshot in almost any other Derby year, but with likely favorite’s Dialed In only running to a 94 Beyer last out and Borel in the irons, look for his odds to drop from the morning line. If he get a good post position, you can almost assure yourself that Borel will give him a clean and efficient trip. Intriguing.
Decisive Moment – this dark bay 3 year-old sired by With Distinction is a consistent sort of fellow. He’s proven he likes the slop at Churchill Downs when he drilled a 47.40 4-furlong workout on April 17th. He was last seen at the Grade III Spiral at Turfway where he ran a credible 2nd earning an 88 Beyer Speed figure on the poly track. Does not have the pedigree top or bottom to get the classic distances, but if he gets a favorable post and a clean trip he probably has as good of a chance as any of the others, especially if the early speed is drawn wide of him. But take note of his great-great grand-sire, Secretariat, who most certainly could get the classic distances and a helluva lot more. At 50-1 or over, why not give it a short dollar try? If he channels his great-great grandaddy he could come home a winner on the first Saturday in May.

2011 Kentucky Derby News – Less Then One Week to … – horse racing

Bob Baffert had already lost a potential Kentucky Derby starter in Jaycito to a foot injury, and now that Baffert has elected to take The Factor out of consideration as well; and, now that J P’s Gusto has also been withdrawn by his trainer, this leaves the door open for Shackleford and Twinspired for making the 20-horse Derby field.

The Derby field is limited to 20 starters , and Silver Medallion and Anthony’s Cross are now 21st and 22nd in terms of graded earnings, in that order, but Silver Medallion is now no longer under consideration. In order for Anthony’s Cross to get in, one of the top 20 will have to withdraw.

Soldat and Dialed In are still down in Florida. Dialed In had his final Derby work on Thursday, working in company with a stable mate going 4 furlongs in 48.53 seconds at the Palm Meadows training center. His trainer Nick Zito has said that despite the moderate work, it was exactly what he was looking for. Hall of fame jockey Jerry Bailey was one of the onlookers, and said that although he thinks Dialed In might have gotten more out of a slightly longer work, perhaps 5 or 6 furlongs, he thinks it was a nice work.

Soldat galloped 1-1/8 miles at Palm Meadows and will be having his final Derby work on Friday, after which he and Dialed In will head for Louisville on Saturday.

Uncle Mo breezed five furlongs over a sloppy Churchill Downs track on Tuesday, which was his first workout since recovering from a gastrointestinal infection discovered following his third place finish in the Wood Memorial on April 9th. His trainer Todd Pletcher was pleased with the work, which was completed in a time of 1:01 4/5, and is optimistic that the horse is getting back on track. He will have his final workout on Monday.

It looks like we will have one foreign horse in the race, Master of Hounds, who is trained by Aiden O’Brien and is expected to ship to Kentucky next Tuesday. He was last seen in the $2 million UAE Derby, in which he finished second, losing by a head-bob at the wire.

Three-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel will get a chance to win his fourth in five years, as he will be the pilot aboard Twice the Appeal, who caused a 25-1 upset in the Sunland Derby. This will be the first time that Borel will ride Twice the Appeal.

Legendary race caller Tom Durkin will not be calling the Kentucky Derby for the first time in 13 years, due to stress-related anxiety. The Triple Crown races this year will be called by Gulfstream Park track announcer Larry Collmus.

Kentucky Derby Betting and The Starting Position – EzineMark

There are only a few days left before Kentucky Derby 2012 hits off. And today, marks a very important event on the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Today, they will hold their draw for post positions in the Run for the Roses and it’s going to have a huge affect on the odds of each horse. Yes, the starting position of a horse is very important to win. You would think that the No. 1 post position, the one closest to the rail, would be ideal because it allows a horse to run the shortest distance to the finish line. That’s true, but a horse starting from the No. 1 post also stands a good chance of getting pinned against the rail. It’s not an accident that no horse has won from the No. 1 post since 1988. History favors horses starting from the middle, which is right around the No. 10 post. These are spots that give horses a chance to start out in front, and from there they can at least stay within striking distance.

Some expert handicappers at Sportsbook.ag says that “If Bodemeister has a bad draw, then it’s got to be Union Rags,” “And if Union Rags has a bad draw, it would be the other way around.” Bodemeister and Union Rags are some of several horses with a fantastic chance to win the Kentucky Derby and join the group of distinguished horses who have won the prestigious race.

With a just a few days before the action at Churchill Downs heats up, take a quick look on my Top 3 favorite horses – and definitely the horses I’m going to put my Kentucky Derby betting on. These horses will give their competition a hard time on the racetrack no matter what their starting position is. And then the battle between these three – winning the race – depends on what position will they get.

Union Rags: Union Rags is a tremendous horse who has had some strong workouts leading up to Saturday’s big race. Trainer Michael Matz has done a wonderful job keeping Union Rags in top form over the past year, and the horse has responded with four victories in its last seven races. Unless something unexpected happens close to the race, expect Union Rags to finish no less than third at the Kentucky Derby.

Gemologist: Gemologist has won five straight races, and in those victories, has shown some tremendous speed and stamina by staying strong over long distances. Trainder Todd Pletcher has to be commended for his ability to keep Gemologist in top shape and condition race after race With great speed, power and stamina, it’s hard to imagine this horse having a poor showing on Saturday.

Bodemeister: Bodemeister became one of the Derby’s favorites after he kicked serious butt at the Arkansas Derby, winning by 9.5 lengths. Famous trainer and Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert has done a masterful job getting Bodemeister in top form ahead of the big race this weekend. Bodemeister has raced four times in 2012, finishing first twice and second twice. Bodemeister will be one of the best prepared horses at the Kentucky Derby and one of the top favorites to win the race.

So consider putting this three on your Kentucky Derby betting list. I am sure one of them will win it. And no one amongst them will get lower than 5th place on the race. Comment on my article if you agree or not.

Kentucky Derby 2012 – Early Contenders by Bloodlines – EzineMark

There are always exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, horses that end up winning the Kentucky Derby come from sires that were able to go that distance effective as well.

Maria’s Mon has been a highly effective sire having produced two Kentucky Derby winners; Monarchos in 2001 and most recently, Super Saver in 2010. According to the Thoroughbred Sports Network book of Sire Stats, the average winning distance for progeny of Maria’s Mon is seven furlongs, which indicates his progeny do best at middle distance races, which makes it all the more remarkable that he would have not one but two sons that have captured the Kentucky Derby.

A.P. Indy is known for being a sire of long distance runners, and his AWD is about a furlong and a half greater than Maria’s Mon. He has never sired a Kentucky Derby winner although he has come close. In 2000, his son Aptitude came in second to Fusaichi Pegasus in that year’s Derby. Attswhatimtalkinbout was a fast closing fourth in the 2003 Kentucky Derby and might have won if he had another six seconds to run them down. Steppenwolfer finished third to Barbaro in the 2006 edition, and Pulpit finished fourth in the 1997 Kentucky Derby.

Dynaformer is also is a highly successful sire, especially at the longer distances. He is the sire of the afore-mentioned Barbaro, and is the sire of 2002 third place finisher in the Derby, Perfect Drift. He is actually more known as a turf sire but many of his offspring do tend to perform just as well on the dirt.

Another sire whose progeny you might want to put on your watch list is El Prado, who sired Paddy O’ Prado, the third place finisher in the 2010 Derby, as well as Medaglia D’oro, who finished fourth in the 2002 Derby after a troubled trip.

The sire of beloved 2004 Kentucky Derby winner, Smarty Jones was Elusive Quality who is not known for producing horses that can go particularly long distances. The average winning distance for his progeny is about 6 ½ furlongs, which indicates he is primarily a sire of sprinters.

The horse that finished runner up to Smarty Jones was Lion Heart, and his sire Tale of the Cat was likewise primarily a sire of sprinters, which makes him somewhat an anomaly as well.

The most famous exception to the rule was probably Secretariat, who was out of the great sire Bold Ruler. Because Bold Ruler was generally a sire of middle distance runners, some questioned whether Secretariat had the stamina to go the 1 ¼ mile distance of the Kentucky Derby after finishing a distant third in the 1 1/8 mile Wood Memorial. Of course, history shows that he could have run all day if it was needed.

When following this year’s two year old crop, other horses to pay attention to are those who are by Smart Strike, Distorted Humor, Giant’s Causeway, Mineshaft, and Candy Ride.

The Triple Crown racing season begins with the Kentucky Derby. It is horse racing’s premier event for 3-year-old horses. When you think of the Kentucky Derby, you think of the best thoroughbreds that have ever competed.

Now imagine building your own virtual Kentucky Derby with Derby winners from previous years. Horse Racing Simulation has a program that offers the opportunity to match up over a hundred past Kentucky Derby champions in simulated races using stunning 3D game graphics. Using a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence program that looks at over 300 traits and attributes of the real horses, users are able to simulate these fantasy races with previous champions with amazing accuracy.

Wouldn’t it be great to see Kentucky Derby winners from the early-1900s compete with some of the more recent champions like Big Brown, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and so many others? This amazing program has over 150 features including a handicapping component that converts the sophisticated past performance data of any race horse into a rich, 3D virtual experience. If you’re not into betting horses, or if you’re not an historian of racing, but you are into social games, consider this the best of all 3D racing games available. Breed, train and race your horses against thousands of other players for real prizes. Truly the best of all online 3D racing games.

Kentucky Derby Post Positions 2012 – Will They Affect the Winner's …

June 29, 2012 By Leave a Comment

Do the post positions for the Kentucky Derby help determine the possible winner?  The answer is absolutely yes.  It’s very uncommon to find Kentucky Derby winners starting from the far outside post position.  Because the race is 1-1/4 miles and because the first approximate 3/8th of a mile is a straightaway, there is usually a long battle between horses to establish the right positioning on the track.  Horses with the inside post positions, unless they have enormous gate speed, will have a tendency to be pushed behind, making it harder to establish a good racing position around the final bend of the home stretch.

Horses that start on the far outside in the Kentucky Derby generally have to exert themselves early in the race to try to establish a decent racing position.

The 2012 Kentucky Derby post positions absolutely play a major role helping and hurting certain key contenders’ chances to cross the finish line first.

Some horses are exceptions and don’t need post position assistance.  Some of the greatest Derby winners have started from all different post positions.  Great Kentucky Derby contenders find a way to win. The 2012 Kentucky Derby post positions won’t be determined until four days before the race, but you might be able to find a real champion prior to that and follow that horse to victory no matter what post position he has.

Watch these key contenders during their 2012 Kentucky Derby prep races.  Look for the horse that can overcome all types of racing trouble – bad post positions, tough trips, maybe being boxed in, pushed to the rear, even a horse that can overcome being bumped around.  These are the types of horses that you’ll find in the winner’s circle being covered in a bed of roses that first Saturday in May.

What most people don’t realize about the http://www.horseracegame.com/racing events.php>  Kentucky Derby  at the conditions the entrants face are very unique.  For the first time, these young 3-year-old thoroughbred champions are being asked to compete at a distance of a mile-and-a-quarter.  More than likely, they will be facing a full field (up to 20 horses) of top-notch, royally bred, competitive race horses, all looking to prove they are worthy of winning the first leg of the Triple Crown, the 2012 Kentucky Derby.

Yes, keep your eye on the post positions for the 2012 Kentucky Derby.  More importantly, keep your eye on the horses.  Superstars will win under any racing conditions.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Was There Value in Betting on Uncle …

June 15, 2012 By Leave a Comment

The third and final pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager which closed Sunday evening had Uncle Mo continuing as the favorite, closing at odds of 3-1, the same odds at which he closed at the end of pool 2.

In theory, he should have closed at even shorter odds in pool 3 because it is closer to the Kentucky Derby and there is less of a risk the closer we get to the event being wagered on. Pool 2 closed March 13th, and Pool 3 closed three weeks later on April 3rd. Now that those three weeks have elapsed, it really doesn’t matter if you took a chance on Uncle Mo for pool 2 or for pool 3 – in both cases, they will pay the same 3-1. The bettor who played him for pool 2 had to absorb those three weeks of risk that something could have happened to Uncle Mo (injury, foul play, etc.) to derail his Derby plans.

Of course, hindsight is always 20/20, but as it turns out, because the odds on him from pool 2 to pool 3 did not change, those who waited until pool 3 got the better deal. Those that bet on him during pool 1 only got slightly better odds of 7/2.

Will a future bet on Uncle Mo be worth it? That depends on his performance in the Wood Memorial. If he blows the competition away, dominating by double digit lengths and earning a 110 Beyer or better, then surely he will be close to even money on Derby day and 3-1 will look great. On the other hand, if he runs a solid but not spectacular race, running a Beyer in the mid-90’s for example and finishing second, then bettors will probably get similar odds on him for the Kentucky Derby.

The relative value of Uncle Mo in these future wager pools also depends on several upcoming races. If Premier Pegasus continues to dazzle out West in the Santa Anita Derby, and if the Baffert-trained The Factor dominates in the Arkansas Derby, then they will surely have more money coming in on them for the Kentucky Derby, in which case the price on Uncle Mo will have to float up a bit.

In any case, unless he throws in an absolute clunker in the Wood, he is the one to beat, especially since he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over the Churchill Downs surface. No horse that had won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile had ever gone on to take the Kentucky Derby until Street Sense did it in 2007, and like Uncle Mo, he won that race at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Derby Facts and History

June 14, 2012 By Leave a Comment

The Kentucky Derby is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” and often referred to as “The Run for the Roses”. The Kentucky Derby is a 1-1/4 mile race held every year on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs and is restricted to three-year-old thoroughbreds. Because only three-year-olds may participate, it’s kind of like the Senior Prom – they have only one year in which they can attend, and that is assuming the horse meets the eligibility requirements.

Admittance to a spot in the Derby is based on earnings the horses have accumulated in graded stakes races only, and only 20 spots are available. In recent years, the fields have been full fields of 20 and often horses on the bubble of graded earnings just get shut out from participating.

The first Kentucky Derby took place on May 17, 1875, before a crowd of about 10,000 spectators, and was run at the somewhat longer distance of 1½ miles. It wasn’t until 1896 when the distance was changed to 1¼ miles at which it is currently run.

The Derby is the first “leg” or “jewel” of the Triple Crown, and to win the Triple Crown means going on to capture the second jewel, the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, and then the third jewel, the Belmont Stakes three weeks after that.

The term Triple Crown was first used in 1923 by the New York Times, but they started regular use of the term Triple Crown in 1930. Credit for the term is also often ascribed to Charles Hatton who also used the term in 1930 to describe Gallant Fox’s accomplishment of winning these three races in 1930. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978, the 11th horse to accomplish the feat. A number of horses have come close, including recently Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998, Smarty Jones in 2004, Funny Cide in 2003, and Big Brown in 2008, all of whom captured the first two jewels, but came up short in the Belmont.

Today the attendance at the Derby averages about 150,000 visitors per year, and is a popular attraction for celebrities, presidents, and even royalty. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended the 2007 Kentucky Derby which was won by Street Sense. President Truman, Gerald Ford, and Richard Nixon are among the U.S. presidents that have attended.

The winner of the Kentucky Derby is awarded a garland of some 400 red roses that is placed around the victor, a tradition which began in 1896.

The race is run beneath the famous twin spires of Churchill Downs, which have become a fixture associated with the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby is not just any sporting event, and the dress code that is in effect encourages attendees to dress stylishly. If you are lucky enough (or wealthy enough) to obtain tickets for one of the reserved seating areas – the grandstand, the Jockey Club, Turf Club, or other luxury suites, business casual is required. Do not wear denim jeans or shorts. Even tennis shoes are not permitted.

The infield is the only place where no real dress code is enforced and thus the attire is more casual. Derby fans are free to wear T-shirts, jeans, shorts, flip flops or other sandals.

The upcoming 2011 Kentucky Derby will be the 137th running and will take place on May 7th, 2011. Some of the Derby favorites for this year’s event include Uncle Mo, Dialed In, and The Facto

2012 Kentucky Derby Future Odds – May Be the Bet of a Lifetime

June 8, 2012 By Leave a Comment

Wynn Las Vegas has updated its 2012 Kentucky Derby future odds and, probably not surprisingly, Union Rags is the 10-to-1 favorite. He is followed by Hansen at 18-to-1 and Creative Cause at 20-to-1.

Below is a look at the top contenders, according to Wynn Las Vegas.

Union Rags (Open 60-to-1; Current: 10-to-1)–Suffered a tough head loss when 2nd to Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The son of Dixie Union won his previous three starts, including the Grade 1 Champagne. He is slated to make his 3-year-old debut in the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park, according to trainer Mike Matz.

Hansen (Open: 250-to-1; Current: 18-to-1)–Capped a perfect 3-for-3 campaign with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The son of Tapit won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile on polytrack at Turfway Park prior to the Breeders’ Cup. Hansen is proven over the Churchill Downs strip and distance doesn’t figure to be an issue with this one. Speculation is he will make his 3-year-old debut in the one-mile Holy Bull Stakes Jan. 29 at Gulfstream Park for trainer Michael Maker.

Creative Cause (Open: 125-to-1; Current: 20-to-1)–The son of  Giant’s Causeway hit the board in all five starts as a juvenile, including wins in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Grade 1 Norfolk. He was beaten just a length in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in his final start as a 2-year-old. Trainer Michael Harrington is pointing Creative Cause to the Grade 2 San Vicente at Santa Anita on Feb. 19.

Gemologist (Open: 150-to-1; Current: 25-to-1)–Completed a perfect 3-for-3 juvenile campaign with an impressive win at Churchill Downs while making his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Nov. 26. Trainer Todd Pletcher has yet to commit to a next race for the son of Tiznow, but the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park appears to be on the radar.

Secret Circle (Open: 150-to-1; Current: 35-1)–Unbeaten in three starts, Secret Circle followed up his Maiden win with victories in the Jack Goodman Stakes at Santa Anita and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint at  Churchill Downs . He has yet to go a route of ground, but the son of Eddington’s pedigree suggests distance shouldn’t be a problem. Secret Circle is likely to prep for the Derby at trainer Bob Baffert’s Southern California base.

El Padrino (Open: 250-to-1; Current: 35-to-1)–The son of Pulpit has garnered some early buzz following his 3rd-place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen while making his stakes debut at Aqueduct Nov. 26. He has just a Maiden win to his credit, but El Padrino hails from the powerful Todd Pletcher barn and appears one to watch.
